Dambridge Oast was built in 1878 to dry hops, an essential flavouring ingredient used by the brewing industry.
Originally with one kiln, a second larger kiln was added when the hop garden and hence the harvest, was enlarged.
The hop plant is a vigorous climber, reaching 15 to 20 feet with yellow flowers, having a distinct smell/taste which gives beer such a unique flavour.
For many years, to supplement local labour, whole families from London's East End would travel to Kent's hop gardens to harvest the crop during August/September.
